GIF files are a web staple — used for animated stickers, reactions, short demos, and decorative images. But animated GIFs are notoriously large. A three-second looping animation can easily be 2–5 MB, which slows down page loads and costs mobile users data. Compressing your GIF before uploading it anywhere makes a real difference.
The most effective way to shrink an animated GIF is to convert it to WebP. WebP supports full animation, transparency and loop controls just like GIF, but typically produces files that are 50–80% smaller at the same visual quality. If you need to keep the GIF format — for example because the platform doesn't support WebP — you can re-encode it at a lower quality setting to reduce its size while keeping all frames.
This tool processes everything in your browser. Your GIF is never sent to any server. You can adjust the quality slider, set a maximum target file size, and preview the result before downloading. The before/after toggle lets you check that the quality is acceptable before committing to the download.
For static GIFs (one frame), compression works the same as any image — the quality slider and target size control work immediately. For animated GIFs output as WebP, all frames are preserved in the output file and the animation continues to loop normally.
